Plain sailing for this year’s Butterfield Cup

In cold and challenging conditions, two new champions were crowned winners of the Guernsey Yacht Club’s Butterfield Cup (Junior Section). After three closely fought races in the final, Xavier Ellis and Lily Parkes emerged triumphant after holding off two-time and defending champions Arthur Collenette and Emma Bloese.

Four teams of two competed in pairs over the course of a full day on the water at Havelet Bay on 16 November 2019. Both finalist teams sailed together earlier in the year at the UK’s National RS Feva Competition in North Wales. The GYC sailors learnt their sailing skills in Guernsey having started on the model yacht pond as five-year olds. It’s the third year the races have taken place since Butterfield donated a boat and a cup to the Guernsey Yacht Club.

Tim Parkes, Rear Commodore Sail said: “Butterfield were very kind to donate a boat along with a cup a few years ago. This has helped us develop a strong group of teenagers sailing double handed boats which is highly technical. For the young sailors it’s wonderful to get this support and encourage them to develop their sailing abilities.”

Managing Director Channel Islands and UK at Butterfield, Richard Saunders said: “We are happy that the boat is continuing to benefit the Guernsey Yacht Club and contributing to the training of their future sailing talent.”
